About Moon Stream

Moon Stream is a new musical unit combining the forces of Japanese visual style rock with the sounds of the New York underground. Created in early 2011, Moon Stream is fronted by Satsuki (vocals, ex RENTRER EN SOI) and Tomo (guitar, echostream). These two veterans of the early visual kei explosion in Japan are now active on opposite ends of the globe.

The first half of the band’s name “Moon” is derived from Satsuki’s own name, while the latter half, taken from Tomo’s band name “echostream,” fuses to create a fresh concept for a band unlike any other – channeling the energy of the moon as a powerful musical force.

Displaying their visual and musical talent from signature rock sounds, ambient compositions, to dance rock music, their US debut launched Moon Stream into the sky.

Q: Is it difficult to maintain your haircolor?
IBI: Yes, it is very hard.


Q: What do you think of American food?
IBI: American cheesecake is so sweet! I received 10 cheesecakes from fans when I went to Otakon. But I took one bite out of each cheesecake so that I could be fair to everyone.


Q: Which came first? Your interest in fashion or your interest in Music?
IBI: My interest in fashion came before my interest in music.


Q: Are you a troublemaker?
IBI: Wherever I go, it rains (everyone laughs).


Q: Do you prefer to use boys or girls when modeling?
IBI: I tend to prefer the type of models who looked as if they were manga characters. So, male or female is fine.


Q: What did you wear before you started becoming a fashion designer?
IBI: My style has always been the same, but before, I always use to wear men’s X (large). Then I became a designer and just started to do clothing myself.

Q: The next time you come to AM2, will you invite Mint?
IBI: Since Mint and I work on different projects now, I can’t say for sure if Mint will come back, but if fans
request Mint. Mint will probably come back as well!

Q: Whats the biggest difference between American food and Japanese food?
IBI: American food is so big and heavy.


Q: What did you do in school?
IBI: In school I wanted to be an artist. Then I met h.Naoto and I got into the fashion industry.

A visual-kei band that was created in early 2006. Their members are Yoshihiko on vocals, Nao on guitar, Kohsuke on bass, and Kiri on drums. heidi.’s first solo and official debut was June 3rd at Ikebukuro CYBER.

Their focus is on trying to create distinctive melodies that are easy to remember for the fans. Throughout their career they have played on many stages, such as at the “hide memorial summit” in the Ajinomoto Stadium, the V-ROCK festival and Over The Edge, the yearly visual scene countdown event. They released “Yokan” as the ending theme song for the anime “Kaicho wa Maid-sama”.

We spoke for some time about the world of Harajuku fashion, their thoughts on design, and how they got their start in the design world.

VAM: Can you introduce yourself and your role in PUTUMAYO?

Hasegawa: Hello, My name is Hasegawa Shunsuke. I am a chief designer for the Japanese Fashion brand, PUTUMAYO.

Nishioka: Hello, my name is Nishioka, and I am the designer of PUTUMAYO.


VAM: What is your individual focus/passion for the brand?

Hasegawa: I am the main graphic desiger of PUTUMAYO. The concept of putumayo is have both darkness and cuteness, so my focus is to keep the balance betweeen the two just right so that the two styles blend well.

Nishioka: I mainly design the shape of the PUTUMAYO clothing and the accessories. My focus is to make sure the clothing is comfortable and to make sure the design and the illustration
pops out well within the clothing.


VAM: When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?

Hasegawa: I went to an art college and majored in graphic design and while I was looking for a job and about to graduate, I was going around to different stores with my portfolio and at that time there was an opening for an illustrator, so I started out just providing illustrations. Now that I’ve worked for the company long enough, I’ve worked my way up to becoming the designer. (He does not just illustrate but he designs the clothing too).

Nishioka: I really liked fashion and clothing from when I was little and that was my dream, but when I attended college I wanted to get involved in the fashion and clothing industry. I went to an art school and after I graduated, I worked at a shop and worked my way up to the designer position.


VAM: What was the first piece of clothing you designed in putumayo, and how does your newer designs compare with your older ones?

Both: [We are] constantly trying to come up with new designs.

Hasegawa: I’ve been in the company for 13 years so it’s been a long time since I’ve started. When I first started working there wasn’t really a concept of gothic lolita; it was more of just lolita. So it was little more of a sweet taste. but as time passed by I’ve leaned more towards a gothic, lolita, and punk style.

Nishioka: The biggest difference is that every season I’m more and more into the different details of the fabrics. The biggest difference that I feel between when I started working and now, is that every season that I work on, I’m more into the details of the different fabrics or the little details in the lining and the shape of the clothes.


VAM: What matters the most to you as a designer?

Hasegawa: My main focus as a designer right now is to be healthy, do work, and have energy to do the work. Since I do long hours of writing etc. it’s not just a regular 9 to 5 job. It’s an endless job. The next thing I’m focusing on is to build up my imagination.

Nishioka: I’m really focused on listening to the voice of the shop staff and the shop manager getting some freedom of what the customer wants. I also think and look around other shops to see what the current trend is and I try to follow the fashion all over the world.


VAM: Do you prefer to sketch or to allow yourself to work with the materials freely?

Hasegawa: I really liked drawing from when I was little, so when I actually designed the illustration I draw it with pencil first, outline it with pen and then scan it into a computer and I work with it from there.

Nishioka: I sketch it out too and after I do a rough sketch I write it into a form (what kind of length, sizing, etc) and after that I just get on to the details of it.


VAM: What are some of your goals for this event and this year?

Hasegawa: My goal for this event is to have alot of fun and to have some fun too. I also want for my customers to have a good time at this event. My goal for this year, [and] every year, is to make better designs and clothing.

Nishioka: My goal for the event is to spread the word of PUTUMAYO and have the people take a look at the clothing. My goal for this year is to design some new styles of clothing and cuts of clothing. I’d also like to spread the word of PUTUMAYO to other countries.


VAM: Do you have any favorite colors are fabrics that you like to work with?

Hasegawa: The main color that I like to work with is black. Black really is a nice color, it gives a nice contrast and gives a crisp look and feel [to clothing]. I dont want the entire store or collection to be in black, so we do put in different colors to make it pop, but the basic color is indeed black.

Nishioka: Black is the main color but we’ve been trying some pastel colors, or depending on the season, we’ll choose the color of the season. So the colors can be the colors of the season too.


VAM: How would you describe each other’s personality?

Hasegawa: My view of Nishioka is that I can really respect her as a person. She really loves the clothing and really knows exactly what the trends are and how customers would like the clothing to be shaped. She also studies alot about fashion. One part about her that I would like her to change is that she forgets alot.

Nishioka: I think him being childlike really works well with his work and his illustrations. It really comes out perfectly with the brand image of PUTUMAYO.


VAM: Finally, do you have a message to PUTUMAYO fans?

Hasegawa: Thank you and I will be designing alot more of the cute and the dark side from now too, so please look forward to my future designs!

Nishioka: I will continue on with designing clothing and I would like to work with more input from the customers so if you are interested in PUTUMAYO fashion or Japanese fashion, thank you.

AM² is changing its model for 2013 to include General Attendance. General Attendance will cost $5.00 for one day and $10.00 for all three days. Attendees who pay this minimal fee will have access to our exhibit hall, artist alley, summer festival, general workshops/panels, autograph sessions, dance, arcade, and other unannounced events. The prices will start at $5/day and $10.00 for all three days prior to the official convention dates with online pre-registration. Prices increase to $10/day during the convention itself.

Attendees can still walk around the areas outside the halls and outside our rooms free of charge. Events such as cosplay gatherings that do not take place in our halls will not require the fee. What is the difference between general attendance and a premium passport?
